2013 Nobel Prize Laureate, Prof. Randy W. Schekman, PhD, is an American biochemist and cell biologist who contributed to the discovery of the genetic basis of vesicle transport in cells. For his insight into the genetic mechanisms underlying vesicle transport, Prof. Schekman was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Presently, Prof. Schekman acts as a professor of molecular and cell biology at University of California, Berkeley, and as an adjunct professor of biochemistry and biophysics at University of California, San Francisco.

In 2020, he was elected Vice President of the European Research Council (ERC).

His unremitting work got him the 2015 Rey Jaime I prize in the "Clinical Medicine" category and placed him as Head of Electrophysiology and Arrhythmias in the European Society of Cardiology’s Science Committee. In addition, he has chaired the European Heart Rhythm Association.
